About the Author
HANGEL MONTERO, (Miguel Ángel López Montero). Nace en la ciudad de Motril en el año de 1.956. Desde muy temprana edad, cursa estudios de dibujo artístico y modelado en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de su ciudad natal bajo la atenta y dedicada dirección de D. Manuel Ligero, director del centro. Termina sus estudios superiores e ingresa en la Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de Sevilla. En dicha ciudad toma contacto con la pintura integrándose en un grupo de neo formalistas de la ciudad hispalense. Durante esta época descubre el retrato como forma de expresión pictórica; a él se dedica por completo, buscando siempre la integración y aplicación de nuevas técnicas al retrato convencional y clásico. En 1.975 funda la "Galería de Arte Hangel" en su ciudad natal, actividad que le permite conocer los entresijos del mercado del Arte y a multitud de autores, técnicas, estilos, etc. Durante este periodo y con posterioridad, Hangel Montero dirige y presenta un programa de crítica de arte para la Cadena Ser a la vez que presta su colaboración para el diario granadino Patria igualmente como crítico de arte. Sin concluir sus estudios de arquitectura, se matricula en la facultad de Derecho de Granada; concluye la licenciatura y se colegia como abogado en los Ilustres Colegios de Granada, Murcia y Jaén, profesión esta que en la actualidad conlleva con la pintura y la enseñanza. En 1.990 Hangel Montero se matricula en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Granada, naciendo desde este momento en él una auténtica obsesión por buscar y estudiar los secretos del Color, sus fundamentos, técnicas y claves para aplicarlas en sus obras. Durante la última década ha dirigido sendos talleres de pintura impartiendo clases de óleo, acuarela, dibujo, modelado y color. No muy amigo de exponer, no ha cesado de hacerlo en colectivas e individuales allá donde le ha sido propuesto, habiendo tenido la suerte de exponer obras suyas en Arco+Sur (Granada) y en ciudades tan destacadas como Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba, Málaga, Zaragoza, Valencia, Murcia, Jaén, Valladolid, Viena, Barquisimeto, etc. Su obra, casi en su totalidad, se encuentra en colecciones privadas e instituciones públicas que se extienden por toda nuestra geografía. En la actualidad dirige Hangel ArtStudio en su ciudad natal, donde imparte clases de óleo, acrílico, acuarela, y color.

The author employs a wealth of anecdotes to re-create the dueling event in all its variety, from the level of insult--which could range from loudly ridiculing a man's choice of entrée in an upscale restaurant to, more commonly, bedding his wife--to such intricacies as the time and place of the duel, the guest list, the selection of weapons and number of paces, dress options, and the decision regarding when to let the attending physician set up his instruments on the field. As he exposes the reader to the fierce mentality behind these proceedings, McAleer describes the duel as a litmus test of courage, the masculine apotheosis, which led its male practitioners to lay claim to both psychic and legal entitlements in Wilhelmine society. The aristocratic nature of the duel, with its feudal ethos of chivalry, gave its upper-middle-class practitioners even more opportunity to distinguish themselves from the underclasses and other marginalized groups--such as Socialists, Jews, left-liberals, Catholics, and pacifists, who, for various reasons, were stigmatized as incapable of "giving satisfaction." The duel, according to McAleer, was thus a social mirror, and the dueling issue political dynamite.

Throughout these accounts, the author sustains a personal voice to convey the horror and fascination of what at first appears to be simply a curious fringe activity, but which he goes on to reveal as an integral element of German society's consciousness in the late nineteenth century. In so doing, he strengthens the argument that Germany followed a path of development separate from the rest of Europe, leading to World War I and ultimately to Hitler and the Nazis.

Here he argues that dueling in Wilhelmine Germany, although only practiced by an aristocratic minority, helped shape German attitudes toward honor, manhood, women, and other countries. McAleer gives a fascinating glimpse into a deadly icon of the German popular imagination during the Kaiserreich. Whether or not one was of sufficient rank to be able to give satisfaction in a duel of honor defined one's status. McAleer has a strong sardonic sense of humor that seems out of place in a scholarly book, and his conclusion that the duel was symptomatic of Germany's Sonderweg, or peculiar path, which led to the Nazis, is at best questionable. Nevertheless, this is an accurate look at a misunderstood topic in German culture with few comparable books in English. Recommended for academic libraries with a strong German studies collections.

In this lecture, we draw on the analogy of making a documentary film: historically, the film was presented as a finished product, giving the viewer little insight into the production process; more recently, there has been a trend to go 'behind the scenes' to expose some of the painstaking work that went into creating the raw footage behind the film; but still much essential work remains hidden. Similarly, in qualitative research, the essential work 'behind the scenes' is rarely discussed. There are many "how to" guides for particular methods, but few texts that discuss the important details of how to select a suitable method, how to adapt it to fit the study context, or how to deal with unexpected challenges that arise. We address this gap by presenting a repertoire of techniques for understanding user needs, practices and experiences with technology, including practical considerations such as tactics for recruiting participants when aiming for a particular sampling strategy, and ways of getting started when faced with a pile of interview transcripts. We present illustrative case studies drawn from prior experience. Our particular focus is on semi-structured qualitative studies, which occupy a space between ethnography and surveys, typically involving observations, interviews and similar methods for data gathering, and methods for analysis based on systematic coding of data.
