Schmidt, coming off his Newbery Honor for The Wednesday Wars (2007) here focuses on the serious stuff, but handles teen levity well enough to keep readers involved. This review is being posted for both Kaplan and the Prinston Review since it is a comparison between these two choices.We purchased both the Kaplan & the Princeton Review GRE sets. The Kaplan seems to have a better explanatory value, but the size and fragility of the set is abominable. The box is poorly designed and is tightly filled with alphabetically aligned sequences that defy keeping in order. The Kaplan cards are no bigger than standard business cards but much thinner, fragile and very hard to handle overall. Perhaps equally problematic is that the size of the font (the lettering) is so small that even with good eyes you will find it difficult to easily read in any systematic working manner. I would liken it to a ribbon notation size message in a Chinese fortune cookie. Kaplan truly cut corners with the material side of their product, and if you do have vision problems or problems with your hand dexterity this is more than an inconvenience. It is a design flaw.The Princeton Review product corrects all of these deficiencies but does not precisely handle the definitions or augmenting expository details as well as Kaplan. Kaplan for Example: Front of card: "Abate" verb (uh bayt). [Back of card]: to reduce in amount, degree, or severity. (example) As the hurricane's force abated, the winds dropped and the sea became calm. Synonyms: ebb; lapse; let up; moderate; relent; slacken; subside; wane.THE PRINCETON REVIEW: (front of card) abate verb (back of card) "to lesson in intensity or degree" (example sentence) Although she filed her tax returns late, Mary hoped the IRS would abate the penalties. Synonyms: decrease, subside, lesson.-----Judge for yourself on comprehension between the two. My wife is Philippine and looking to advance her Nursing career towards a PhD. She speaks great English, but clearly needs help for the GRE testing level with English as essentially her second language. My evaluation is being presented with her needs in mind. In our overall opinion, the Kaplan version would be corrected utilizing the Princeton material format, and the larger Princeton material box and set up would be equally improved with more of the Kaplan touch for competency in the translation.We hope this comparison is useful in helping you to decide.

Overall, the extensive vocabulary inventory is sure to be useful. This box includes many arcane words that most of us do not encounter in daily life so I find them beneficial as study marterial. I enjoy having the online access to the flash cards as well as the hard copy. The only drawback I can find is that they just have synonyms on the cards. I appreciate the use of the word in a sentence but would have liked to have antonymns printed on the card for better context and understanding. I would buy these again even with that said.

Very comprehensive! I'm taking a GRE class through an education company and most of the words overlap and appear in their work! I love these come with the definitions and you don't have to fill them in! Definitely recommend! I would give them 10 stars if I could.
